MARINA STAFF TRAINING
It is strongly recommended that marina managers involve the staff in realizing the diagnostic study, allowing them to take possession of the process right from the start bearing in mind that they will subsequently ensure its practical implementation and monitoring.
At least one person among the staff must receive “Clean Harbours” training in order for him to act as a key point for his colleagues, teaching them good habits and encouraging them to get training in their turn.
The professional development of marina managers and their staff is carried out by specific environmental training and qualifications.
RAISING MARINA USERS AWARENESS
Raising marina “users” awareness to the Clean Harbours approach is achieved in 2 ways:
- Visually: The specific Clean Harbours Guidelines signage ensures the continuous giving of environmental messages ,thanks to the graphical interaction between colour, pictograms and typographies. Other visual supports help spread the message, social networks, videos, educational films, posters, websites….).
- Orally: The marina staff encourage boaters to behave in the best possible way. They are assisted by associations committed to environmental awareness-raising such as Ecogestes Méditerranée.
Port managers do not only have to raise their staff’s and boaters’ awareness of the Clean Harbours approach, they also have to communicate on many other different levels:
- They have to demonstrate the benefits generated by the Clean Harbours strategy, which is an advantage to everyone.
- They have to involve indispensable partners:
- yachting professionals,
- maritime shipping companies,
- professional and recreational fishermen,
- boat rent and charter companies,
- professional operators within the port area and producers of waste (restaurants, bars, grocery stores, food caterers…),
- neighbouring towns and villages, potential port users or located in the vicinity of the port basin.
- locally elected officials and in particular, those in charge of the coastal water environment, beaches and the quality of bathing waters.
This phase of communication can be performed during port visits that the port managers will organize, promoting Clean Harbours facilities. The “pontoon party” model can inspire the “Capitainerie party”.
